Two golf outings in September have special meaning for members of the propane industry.

The 17th annual Pros4Care Golf Benefit supporting prostate cancer awareness will take place Sept. 8 at The Courses at Watters Creek in Plano, Texas. All proceeds benefit patients and prostate cancer research.

Pros4Care is a nonprofit founded in 2006 by propane industry members Ed Varney, owner of Top Line Management; Pat Hyland, formerly of the Propane Education & Research Council and LP Gas magazine; and Bill Powers, formerly of Heritage Propane. The organization aims to save lives through education and resources. The benefit has raised more than $300,000 in 16 years.

Then on Sept. 11, the inaugural Propane & Power Relief Fund Charity Golf Tournament will take place at The Golf Club at Mattaponi Springs in Ruther Glen, Virginia. Its mission is to provide propane and power relief to communities in need.

The fund was born from the firsthand experiences of founder Kelly Tidwell, who saw a gap in disaster relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Helene, most notably in western North Carolina.

“As you know, when a natural disaster strikes in your area, your focus is on you, your family, your company and employees, and then your customers,” Tidwell writes in promoting the event. “It is hard to look outside that box and see the needs of others when the needs are so great from within.”

With the industry’s support, Tidwell explains, the group has constructed its first large-scale propane cylinder fill station, provided thousands of cylinder refills with approximately 50,000 gallons of propane and nearly 100 portable generators, to include connection cables, extension cords, LP cylinder adapters and other essentials – all provided at no cost to those in need.

“This would not be possible without your support, and I can safely say that you saved lives last winter in Appalachia,” he adds.

Both groups are encouraging sponsor participation.
